Exercise cannot cure rheumatoid arthritis but it can be highly effective at reducing joint pain and improving flexibility. Nearly everyone benefits from a walking program. To prevent morning stiffness do gentle stretching before going to bed at night and before getting out of bed in the morning. Spend extra time stretching any joint that has become frozen. Rotate joints of wrists, hand, feed, knees, neck. Don/t do any exercise that puts excessive force on an inflamed joint.

Exercise boosts immunity by stimulating the activity of natural killer cells. These specialized white blood cells destroy other cells in the body that have been infected with viruses. Aim for at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular activity per day. Walking is a good form of exercise. Like exercise, sleep boosts immunity.

Diseases: Treatment in Ancient Time

September 12, 2009

Medicine and surgery were practiced by the ancient Egyptians. Each physician is a healer of one disease and no more, wrote the historian Herodotus. The country was full of physicians, some of the eye, some of the teeth, some of what pertains to the belly and some of the hidden diseases. In Egypt surgical techniques included cauterization to control hemorrhage, and elevating a fragment of bone that might be pressing against a person’s brain in cases of skull fracture. Splints were used for broken bones, some mummies even having been discovered with splints made of tree bark fastened with bandages. Dentistry was practiced in Phoenicia. One specimen of dental work found involved the use of fine gold wire to bind together six teeth in the lower jaw. In another specimen, a gold wire prosthesis served to bridge in teeth taken from another person. Hebrew physicians apparently used some herbs and perhaps certain dietetic remedies. Scented oil from plants was applied to wounds and bruises perhaps to serve antiseptic purposes or to produce a soothing effect and lessen pain. Moderate drinking of wine was ocassionally recommended for its cheering effect and for its medicinal properties.

in the days of young manhood

June 3, 2009

1 Remember, now, your Grand Creator in the days of your young manhood, before the calamitous days proceed to come, or the years have arrived when you will say: “I have no delight in them”; 2 before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars grow dark, and the clouds have returned, afterward the downpour; 3in the day when the keepers of the house (arms & hands) tremble, and the men of vital energy (legs) have bent themselves, and the grinding women (teeth) have quit working because they have become few, and the ladies seeing at the windows (eyes) have found it dark; and the doors onto the street (lips) have been closed, when the sound of the grinding mill becomes low (toothless), and one gets up at the sound of a bird,(melodic notes) and all the daughters of song sound low (hard of hearing). Also, they have become afraid merely at what is high, and there are terrors in the way. And the almond tree carries blossoms (gray hair), and the grasshopper drags itself along (no more living bones), and the caper berry bursts (no apetite), because man is walking to his long-lasting house (grave) and the wailers have marched around in the street; before the silver cord (spinal cord) is removed, and the golden bowl (brain) gets crushed, and the jar at the spring (heart) is broken, and the waterwheel for the cistern has been crushed (poor circulation). Then the dust returns to the earth just as it happened to be and the spirit itself returns to the [true] God who gave it. Ecclesiastes 12:1-8
